"Not your typical lathe cut" - Why Little Elephant cuts are better:

We offer CUT records, not EMBOSSED records.

Most custom record cutting companies only offer records that are embossed. In other words, the grooves are pushed into the record, rather than cut out. The fidelity on an embossed record is much less than the quality on a cut record. The music on an embossed record is considerably lower in volume, noisier, and has a hollow sound. If you want the music on the record to sound good, the grooves must be cut out.

Little Elephant records are cut in stereo.

A lot of lathe cut records out there are cut in mono. This is because the equipment they are using is outdated, and easier to acquire. Obviously, this is a major factor of the music listening experience. This day and age, why even bother listening to a record that isn't stereo?

We use a feedback cutterhead.

We cut our records with a "feedback" cutterhead, rather than a "dynamic" cutterhead. Feedback heads are much more sought after in the vinyl cutting industry, and are the only option if you want true quality sounding grooves. Feedback cutterheads control the resonant frequencies of the head and allow for louder cuts, less distortion, and a much flatter frequency response. You must have a feedback cutterhead in order to have professional results. Ultimately, records cut with feedback heads sound like pressed records.

The big picture.

We are here to erase the stigma of lathe cut records. The term has often been associated with being lo-fi and inferior. The records we are comparable to factory pressed records in terms of sound quality, durability, and playability.

Sample Cuts:

Here are some sample cuts of the real thing, recorded straight from the record player. First is "Born To Run" by The Boss, and second is "By Presidential Decree" by Buffalo NY's, Head North.

Does the audio need to be mastered for vinyl?

It is not an absolute necessity to have your music files mastered specifically for vinyl. We understand that many projects are made from old releases, or that getting the audio mastered may not be in your budget. We always do the best we possibly can to make the audio sound the best it can on the medium. However, if the audio is not mastered for vinyl, you may hear some differences between the digital file, and the vinyl cut. If you would like your records to sound the best they possibly can, then we suggest having it mastered for vinyl.  If you would like some tips on how to master your audio for vinyl, click here.

How do the records sound compared to pressed records?

The sound quality on our records are similar to pressed records. However, there are many factors that play into getting music to sound good on vinyl. Having well mixed, professional sounding audio, goes a very long way in having a great sounding vinyl. Also, in order to get the best possible sound, we also suggest having the audio mastered for vinyl. However, if this is not an option, that is okay! We can do everything we can to make it sound the best it possibly can on the medium.

How do the jackets look compared to regular jackets from a factory?

Our jackets are printed on a high quality inkjet printer. The vast majority of prints come out looking great. However, because they are done on inkjet, minor striations can appear, especially on designs with very dark, solid backgrounds. For best results, we recommend using designs with lighter colors. If you would like some examples, check out the images above!
